Ep. 46 – Hormone Replacement Therapy: Andropause (AKA Manopause) (Part 3) – with Anthony Llabres

As a sort of follow-up to that conversation, and as part three of our Hormone Replacement Therapy series, we talk about BHRT for men and touch base on Andropause, AKA “Manopause.”

We also answer some of the questions you all wrote in after listening to Part 1 and Part 2 of the Hormone Replacement Therapy series!

 

What is Andropause?

  • It’s a usually slow but steady reduction of the production of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone, which are the main androgens or male hormones.
  • The ten most common causes of death in males are heart disease, cancer, accidents (or unintentional injury), stroke, lower respiratory diseases, diabetes, fluid pneumonia, suicide, kidney disease, and Alzheimer’s… and when you look at those ten causes it’s pretty clear that andropause can play a role in nearly all of them if not all of them.

 

The symptoms of Andropause (it’s a short list, but so real):

  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Weight gain
  • Bone and muscle loss
  • Foggy thinking
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability

 

Factors that Drive Andropause – The Big 3:

  1. Insulin Resistance
  2. Cortisol/Stress connection
  3. Estrogen Dominance

 

The Liver’s Role in Healing and Reducing Symptoms of Andropause:

Liver health is key in healing or reducing the symptoms of Andropause. Conversely, abusing the liver can worsen Andropause.

If your liver isn’t working properly, it can’t metabolize excess estrogen, it can’t metabolize sugar properly – leading to insulin resistance. All of the big 3 contributing to Andropause – insulin resistance, estrogen dominance, and cortisol problems – can impact the liver.

Other factors that can alter liver function and also elevate estrogen include…

  • Deficiency of Zinc
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Certain drugs can cause estrogen imbalance
  • Heavy Metal and Chemical Toxicity
