Dr. James Nagel specializes in Advanced Hormone Restoration Therapy and started Quality of Life Medicine, a boutique Hormone Medicine clinic that specializes in advanced hormone restoration therapies for cisgender women and men from puberty to old age.
Dr. James Nagel also co-developed both the Panacea Protocol™ and Panacea|HRT™ with our previous guest, clinical hormone coach Moxie Marie Hoäg.
Marie recently published a list of questions every woman should ask when looking for a good hormone doctor, so I decided to use this same list to guide my interview with Dr. Nagel. If you want to see this list yourself, you can click here to download it for free.
Who are Dr. Nagel’s average patients and what problems are they typically experiencing when they reach out to him?
Dr. Nagel’s main patient base is perimenopausal and menopausal women and women with menstrual irregularities, ages as young as reproductive age to about 60 years old.
Their symptoms include:
What formal training does Dr. Nagel have in HRT?
How many women, in general, has Dr. Nagel successfully treated using HRT?
“I don’t know an exact number, but I can tell you it’s in the tens of thousands.”
Which generation of HRT does Dr. Nagel use, and can you describe the difference as a physician of advanced hormone therapy in the clinic?
In Dr. Nagel’s office, they use the Panacea|HRT™ hormone replacement system, which shouldn’t be confused with the Panacea Protocol, “which actually involves all of the elements of a good, complete therapeutic prescription for wellbeing. It’s the periodic table of health, basically.”
This is how they describe the system on the Quality of Life Medicine website:
“Panacea|HRT™ is the most advanced and clinically sustainable bioidentical hormone restoration system for women in the world, and is the only advanced customizable standardized form of compounded bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on the market.
“Panacea|HRT™ is a fourth generation HRT system that consists of transdermal bioidentical hormones in topical compounded cream preparations that are dosed to healthy levels of hormones naturally produced by your body when you were young, and intelligently administered in a way that mimics the female body’s natural hormone physiology.
“The proprietary formulated creams and their amounts are designed to rhythmically vary over the course of a 28-day cycle as youthful hormone levels naturally flow, that works in conjunction with our professional Panacea Protocol Lifestyle Hormone Medicine Program™. The goal is to restore natural hormones to healthy reproductive levels in a manner that replicates the female body’s own physiology to what we call the “Hormone Sweet Spot”™.”
This system is unique to other forms of HRT because it can be adapted to each unique individual, as the dosing requirements can vary as much as 1000% between two patients.
As a Functional Medicine practitioner, how does Dr. Nagel address the root cause of his female patients’ conditions?
“In order to be successful, a physician needs to have a good understanding of the origin of disease.” And one of the most frustrating things about medical school, for Dr. Nagel, was that he had no more understanding of the origin of disease than when he started.
However, thanks to functional medicine principles, we now understand that the vast majority of health problems are related to the integrity and function of your gastrointestinal tract and your human microbiome. Meaning we now realize that it is the absorption of intestinal toxins from the gut that creates a vicious cycle that aggravates, causes, or prevents recovery from many chronic diseases.
Dr. Nagel is then able to integrate that knowledge when addressing underlying endocrine issues with his patients. And that’s why they don’t just do hormone therapy, but also help patients optimize their holistic health through the Panacea Protocol.
What does it mean to balance a woman’s hormones?
When you can get a woman to their personal “Hormone Sweet Spot.”
The “Hormone Sweet Spot” is when a woman can’t imagine feeling better than she does, with virtually all mental and physical symptoms eliminated, and her blood labs concur with how she feels.
There are specific clinical goals that vary for each patient, determined using a blood test.
