Ep. 70 – Sugar Addiction: Quitting the Most Popular Drug – with Mike Collins

We all know sugar is bad for us. We tell ourselves that we’ll just have a little bit, but it rarely works out that way. So why can’t we stop when we start?

We all know sugar is bad for us. We tell ourselves that we’ll just have a little bit, but it rarely works out that way.  So why can’t we stop when we start?

Today, our guest Michael Collins will explain why it’s so hard to kick sugar addiction and how you can actually succeed next time, with just a few simple re-frames of your current ideas around sugar.

Michael has been completely sugar-free for over 30 years and has worked closely with others to help them regain lives ravaged by various substance use disorders.  He raised two children sugar-free from the womb to over six years old (a remarkable feat), when they only had sugar one a month for their entire childhood.

He is Chairman of the Board of The Food Addiction Institute, an IRS certified 501c nonprofit that helps raise awareness about processed food and sugar worldwide, and the founder of SugarAddiction.com, which has been helping thousands successfully quit sugar for over nine years. He’s also the author of the bestselling Amazon Kindle book The Last Resort Sugar Detox Guide.

Why is sugar so normalized?

Cultural and societal norms are stopping people from believing the harmful effects this drug can have – and parents are the biggest culprits behind sugar addiction in our society. Loads of cakes, ice cream, and soda are dropped off at just about every social event, making it nearly impossible to avoid.

And once you’re conditioned to crave it, it’s a hard addiction to kick.

Quitting Sugar & The Sugar Detox

People sometimes call marijuana a gateway drug, but sugar is the real gateway drug. Sugar is more addictive than cocaine and is the leading contributor to our nation’s health crisis today.

And as people grow up, they reach for sugar to help them calm down and relieve stress. However, this connection is rarely made by people who are looking to detox and diet. Detoxing from sugar will result in physical and mental withdrawals, so joining some sort of group is essential for a smooth recovery.
