Are you struggling with your health? Have you tried everything and not a single thing made sense? Then this episode of the Rebel Health Coach is for you.

Because our guest is Dr. Garrett L. Smith, AKA the Nutrition Detective, a licensed naturopathic physician who is on a mission to teach people that good health can be obtained without the typical neurotic and fear-driven approaches that have become so trendy in these times.

I am so honored that Dr. Garrett agreed to come on the show — and this is a conversation that really blew my mind.

We discuss the role of both vitamin D and vitamin A, as well as how food fortification and misinformation has contributed to our increasingly diseased population. Additionally, why certain diets, like the carnivore diet, seem to work so well for some people based on his Vitamin A toxicity hypothesis.

Vitamin A, Vitamin A Toxicity, & Vitamin D

Vitamin A and Vitamin D are both fat-soluble vitamins and hormones — and these two are like a double-edged sword. You need the right amount of them in your body, but too much or too little can both lead to health consequences.

A and D have a wide range of key functions in our bodies, yet both are over supplemented. On top of that, these deficiencies are usually treated with cheap supplements, which can cause other issues like toxicity.

Hypervitaminosis A (Vitamin A toxicity) can lead to liver damage and Vitamin D toxicity is a buildup of calcium in your blood (hypercalcemia).

Sadly, this issue is often overlooked and misunderstood by mainstream docs. But, after diving into the research of Grant Genereux, Dr. Garrett started to realize that Vitamin A toxicity was rampant in his patients — and one of the big things contributing to it was Vitamin D deficiencies!

And this long-term chronic Vitamin A toxicity can lead to a whole host of fairly common symptoms (source:

  • blurry vision or other vision changes
  • swelling of the bones
  • bone pain
  • poor appetite
  • dizziness
  • nausea and vomiting
  • sensitivity to sunlight
  • dry, rough skin
  • itchy or peeling skin
  • cracked fingernails
  • skin cracks at the corners of your mouth
  • mouth ulcers
  • yellowed skin (jaundice)
  • hair loss
  • respiratory infection
  • Confusion
  • Headaches

We also expose ourselves to a number of things that can lead to vitamin A toxicity. The most common are supplements, especially cheap supplements. But some skincare products out there are just straight-up poison, especially those containing Accutane or Retin-A. You should also avoid large amounts of beta-carotene, which is the inactive form of vitamin A; synthetic vitamin E, which is found in some e-cigarette cartridges; and eating large quantities of animal liver.

You can’t entirely avoid Vitamin A in your life — but you should definitely double check your supplements and medication to see if you’re exposing yourself to potentially toxic chemicals unknowingly. And if you still have any questions, reach out to Dr. Garrett at
