This episode is dedicated to my father, who passed away at the age of 64. His birthday was last Wednesday, November 20th, and he is a huge part of why I got into the field of health coaching and functional medicine in the first place.
So, thanks, Dad. It’s because of you that The Rebel Health Coach Podcast began a little over three years ago. I would also like to thank all of you for supporting this show and all of the amazing guests I have had over the years… much love to you all!
I will be taking a little Sabbatical over the Holidays to help my aging mother and put some big things together for the shows in 2020, and in preparation for that, I have revamped my website!
So, I’d like to share some of the new resources you’ll find at ThomUnderwood.net, including a Toolbox page featuring the best tools and services available to improve your health. Everything from Functional Testing, Great Plains Labs (Food Allergy Testing, OAT test), Evexia, Spectral Cell, Better Labs Now, Trace Elements, and QuickSilver Supplements. This includes Discounts on Kion, QuickSilver, Huso, Thrive Market, Butcher Box, Four Sigmatic, True Nutrition, Natural Stacks, Bio Optimizer, Perque, Primal Herb, Age Force, and more.
Looking forward to what you can expect in 2020…
I have been diving into the deep end of the pool studying Epigenetics, which is defined as “the study of changes in organisms caused by modification of gene expression rather than alteration of the genetic code itself.”
I’ve been looking at the role genetics play in how we age, weight loss, nutrition, and performance, and so far it’s been fascinating. For example, just because someone has a certain SNP (single nucleotide polymorphisms) does not mean you have to turn this gene on. In other words, your genes load the rifle potential medical problems, but something else pulls the trigger. That is to say that how genes are expressed is affected by your lifestyle, as well as other environmental factors. Not all of those factors are within your control, of course, but many are — and knowledge is power.
While I was going over my GxRenew results, which is a test for Aging, my GRM7 (SNP) for hearing loss, which is the most prevalent sensory impairment as we get older, shows that I have the genetic predisposition (sometimes also called genetic susceptibility) for hearing impairment, which I did not take very good care of while I was younger.
Genetic testing is a hot topic and I believe it is the future of preventive health. The research behind genetic testing related to nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle is focused on understanding how specific genes dictate how your body processes micronutrients such as protein, fats, and carbohydrates and how specific genes limit or enhance fitness and the way you age.
To help people understand how their DNA affects their response to nutrition and exercise is paramount for optimum health. A variant in your genes called an SNP can affect the way your body utilizes, absorbs, and metabolizes nutrients. SNPs can also affect the way you lose weight, how your body responds to exercise, and how you age. By understanding how these SNPs affect us, we can create actionable nutritional and lifestyle strategies specific to a person’s genotype based on scientific evidence.
Nutrigenomics
The fascinating field of Nutrigenomics brings clarity we have never had before, with greater insight into how your body responds to foods based on their genetic predisposition. The lab I have teamed up with will evaluate the potential impact of your genotype for each gene tested, with a strict criterion using the largest and most scientifically valid genome-wide association studies available.
Please note that just because your report reflects a genetic variation linked to a particular trait does not necessarily mean you will express that trait. This testing is meant as an educational tool, which suggests that there is a greater chance that you will express a trait, but behavioral, environmental, and other factors can also play a role in whether you will actually exhibit the trait.
Genetic Testing for Weight Management with GxSLim, Healthy Aging with GxRenew, Comprehensive Micronutrient Predisposition Analysis with GxNutrient, and last but not least, GxPerform are all part of the ultimate health and activity performance improvement program based on your unique genetic profile.
GxSlim is a weight management program that takes your unique genetic makeup into account and provides you with diet and exercise strategies that are tailored to your genotype. This is not guesswork, one-size-fits-all, or a fad diet of any kind – these are the only diet and exercise recommendations you will ever need again, because they are based on your DNA. GxSlim Program Includes:
GxRenew is an innovative healthy aging program that utilizes your genetic profile to provide nutrients, food, activity and lifestyle recommendations to keep you looking and feeling young longer. Recently published research has linked numerous aging signs to genetic predisposition, and many of these indications may be addressed with DNA-based lifestyle changes.
GxNutrient program provides a comprehensive analysis of your genetic predisposition to absorbing micronutrients in your diet. Even if you eat a perfectly balanced diet with plenty of naturally occurring vitamins and minerals, most of us have some difficulty in absorbing one or more micronutrients at the cellular level. Understanding your genetic profile for how your body likely processes key vitamins and minerals is an important step in developing a healthy nutrition program.
GxPerform is the ultimate health and activity performance improvement program based on YOUR unique genetic profile. The best nutrition, workout and supplement regimens cannot be determined without understanding your genetic predisposition. For average athletes wanting to be good and good athletes wanting to be great, GxPerform provides you with the food, nutrient and training recommendations to allow you to unleash your athletic potential.
I’ll be sharing a lot more of this information and doing a lot more of this work moving forward, but I hope this gives you something to start thinking about and taking action on today.
